THE FACTOR RELATED TO SNACKS PREFERENCE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

ABSTRACT
Background: The habit of eating snacks is popular among Indonesian, especially in school aged children. This study aims to identify the most related factor to snack preference in elementary school children. Method: This study was an observational research and the samples were 73 fourth to sixth grade of elementary school children at Pekunden State Elementary School selected by using simple random sampling. The data collection included snacks preference, amount of money for snacks purchase, mother formal education, breakfast frequency, bringing the lunch box frequency, snacks availability, and the role of mass media which is collected based on interview result through questionnaire. Result: The children’s knowledge about nutrition and snacks were only amount 24,7% included in good category (45,2%). Mother’s formal education were good enough that mostly at senior high school level (37%) or in upper level. Majority number of money for snack purchase revolved between Rp 500 – Rp 5000 at school (95,9%) and Rp 500 – Rp 2500 when at home (52,05%). The children used to having their breakfast everyday (71,2%), whereas frequency of bring the lunch box were in sometime category (1-3 times a week) (69,9%). Healthy snacks were a lot of available at home whereas unhealthy snacks like high natrium snacks, high fat snacks, high sugar snacks, and high sugary beverage were a lot of available outside home. Frequency of bring the lunch box to school had the most correlated factor for snacks preference in elementary school children. Conclusion: Frequency of bring the lunch box to school had the most correlated factor for snacks preference in elementary school children.
